Join The March to Fight for their Lives!

24 September 2014, Nairobi: For Immediate Release:

Invitation to the Global March for Elephants & Rhinos- Nairobi, Saturday 4th October 2014.

Kenyans are uniting with thousands of people in over 120 cities across the globe asking us all to shun ivory and rhino horn as commodities. Set to be the largest demonstration of its kind ever, the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos (GMFER) on 4th October will raise awareness and ask each and every government around the world to publicly destroy their stockpiles of illegal wildlife products, to show zero tolerance for illegal trading.

Giving their full support to this global event, leading Kenyan efforts Like Youth for Nature, Save the Elephants, Kenyans United Against Poaching (KUAPO), Wildlife Direct, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), along with hundreds even thousands of concerned Kenyan citizens, will be marching in Kenya.

The Nairobi march begins at National Museums of Kenya at 8am with kickoff at 9am and will end at Uhuru Gardens on Langata Road. More information can be found on facebook event page: Global March For Elephants & Rhinos – Nairobi.

Marches are also being held In Maasai Mara-Narok and Diani Beach-Mombasa. Everyone is invited to join any of the marches to say, “I joined the fight to save Wildife.”

This Global March effort was inspired and grew from Kenyan marches back in January 2013 when Kenyans took to the street to show support for the mass killing of 11 elephants in Tsavo area. Later that year DSWT helped to launch the first global effort. Sadly no march was held in Kenya due to the Westgate tragedy. This year we can all march and be proud of a Global effort that grew from just a few concerned Kenyans caring about wildlife.

“Debating the statistics is no longer relevant, “ GMFER event organizers say, “it doesn’t matter which data you choose to look at, there is no denying that the world is rapidly losing elephants, rhino and lions towards extinction.”

Painfully clear too is that even in this ‘modern age’ a rampant demand for freshly poached elephant ivory, rhinoceros horn, and lion bones continues. This growing trade in body parts is a key factor in the demise of these globally iconic species, and GMFER event organizers say that “killing this demand is a key part of the solution.”

The message is loud and clear and coming from all corners of the globe – at the current rate of killing and with the growing demand for ivory, horn and bones, our children’s children are highly unlikely to see the most magnificent animals in the wilds of Africa.

There are times when we have to make crucial decisions based on the information we’ve got. GMFER organizers are encouraging us to make such a decision now, because there is no “later”.
